Lapse: Leave: Linger at Beekman Place, NYC
Lapse: Leave: Linger is a site-specific multichannel sound installation placed in spaces of temporary, transitory activity. For the Van Alen Institute, Chavez created a live sound installation version of Lapse: Leave: Linger. Combining the effect of movement and distance, sounds emitted in this installation travel around the iconic Beekman Place Penthouse, reacting to the unique nuances to the Paul Rudolph designed home.
The multichannel speaker array was composed on-site, sonically complementing the architecture of the space. Sound sources filling the space consisted of tones, samples & songs from Chavez’s vinyl library. All sounds were individually chosen specifically for each site.
Listeners attending the ELSEWHERE Gala for the Van Alen Institute traveled through 23 Beekman Place and had the opportunity to find their own vantage point as sounds travel around them.
By providing a sonic link between individuals and their surroundings, Lapse: Leave: Linger created a aural dialogue between different spaces and individual perspective during this special gala.
